We experienced a heavy rain, so the ceremony for the International Day of Older Persons was held in the main lobby of Peterborough City Hall on Friday, September 29th. While City Hall staff raised the UN International Day of Older Persons flag outside, Deputy Mayor Henry Clarke read out the Day of Older Persons proclamation, which included a statement that Peterborough was a municipality in the forefront of providing services for seniors.
This theme was echoed by our guest speaker, Jim Russell, Executive Director of the United Way of Peterborough and District, who outlined the many seniors services available in in the city and beyond.
The ceremony was co-hosted by Dean Shewring, Membership Secretary of the South Central Ontario Area Council of CURC and Marion Burton, President of the Peterborough and District Labour Council. Fourteen people were in attendance, slightly more than last year, including from Unifor 524 Retirees, CUPW Local 590, OPSEU Local 345, CUPE, the United Way and City staff.
