About this event:
October 1 in Toronto was a blustery and overcast day. This did not deter members of the Ontario Chinese Seniors Organization, the Toronto Area Council of the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada and the Toronto Retirees Network who gathered at City Hall where the Seniors Voice flag was raised and the UN Day of Older Persons was celebrated.
Maureen King of the Toronto Retirees Network and an officer of CURC had arranged the details of the event. Barry Stevens who is President of the Toronto Area Council welcomed everybody and spoke to the issues of concern to seniors like decent pensions for all.
After the flag raising the group marched to Queens Park to join the OFL’s, Rally for Decent Work. At the rally, attended by several thousand, Ted Hext of the Ontario Federation of Union Retirees spoke in recognition of International Day of Older Persons. He noted that retirees’ advocacy does not include only issues of retired persons, but we advocate a better retirement for all. Our Sisters and Brothers that still put in a fair days work deserve a fair days pay that includes decent pensions.
Barry Stevens spoke with Andrea Horwath, leader of the Ontario NDP, who was at the rally. He thanked all the seniors who had come out for both events.
