Report from British Columbia re: the United Nations International Day of Older Persons

In response to COSCO's BC province wide invitation, which was supported by COSCO affiliates including BC FORUM, Proclamations/Declarations of the October 1st United Nations International Day of Older Persons in 2016 were made by:

  • City of Parksville
  • District of Kent
  • Village of Keremeos
  • District of North Vancouver
  • City of North Vancouver
  • City of New Westminster
  • District of Highlands
  • City of Trail
  • District of Oak Bay
  • The Resort Municipality of Whistler
  • District of Central Saanich
  • Village of Chase
  • City of Vancouver
  • District of Squamish
  • City of Burnaby
  • City of Richmond

For a total of 16

The following raised the UN International Day of Older Persons flag:

  • District of North Vancouver
  • City of North Vancouver
  • Township of Langley
  • City of New Westminster
  • City of Vancouver
  • City of White Rock

For a total of 6

Altogether, we know of 18 municipalities etc. that responded to this invitation by making a Proclamation/Declaration and/or raising a flag. There could be others that we don't know of.

It was noted that an obstacle to the raising of the flag, as stated by some of the municipalities, was that October 1st 2016 was a Saturday, a day that most municipal staff have off. Some of the municipalities who did participate solved this by raising the flag on Friday and lowering it on Monday.

As October 1st 2017 will be on a Sunday, next year's invitation will include the suggestion that the flag be raised on Friday and lowered on Monday if staffing is an issue.

It was also noted that there were a number of public events around the province of BC recognizing seniors and the October 1st 2016 UN International Day of Older Persons.
