The International Day of Older Persons in Peterborough was held on Friday, September 30, 2016. About a dozen people showed up to the flag-raising ceremony outside Peterborough City Hall at 11 AM (photo of group). Represented at the event were representatives from the Peterborough and District Labour Council, CURC South Central Ontario, Unifor Local 524 Retirees, the City of Peterborough and the United Way.
Dean Shewring of CURC hosted the event and outlined the meaning of the Day.( He is standing at right end of the flag in the group photo) Leslie Parnell, City Councillor for Otonabee Ward, read out the Proclamation on behalf of the Mayor. Marion Burton, President of the Peterborough and District Labour Council, spoke on the theme of Age Discrimination and on issues related to growing older in society.
Half a dozen of the group then gathered afterwards at the Black Horse Pub for lunch and to discuss future October 1 events.
